During our stay in Ushuaia we tried to count how much we did spend on our bus and train rides from Buenos Aires down to the south. And it was almost 400eur for couple of weeks. Even though the distances were great, we decided that we cannot afford local transportation for the whole honeyear. Since we met other travellers hitch-hiking, we decided to try it ourselves! And this was the best solution for saving money so far. On top of it, we met wonderful people in our way. For instance, this truck driver, which was carrying 5 million USD cargo in his back and invited us to his home in Mendoza once we are there... ;)

In several days we reached small town called El Calafate in the west side of Patagonia. The town itself is very small, touristy, as well as, it is a great starting point for ice trekking and visiting Glacier Perito Moreno. Glacier is located about 80 km west from the town. It is possible to take a local bus or buy a much more expensive excursion, which might include boat or ice trekking. We decided just to walk on well-built paths for couple of hours in Perito Moreno Glacier park. We have witnessed stunning huge ice pieces breaking apart and falling into the lake! Once in the lifetime everyone has to see this.

We were very lucky, because our Couchsurfing host had offered us a ride to Perito Moreno glacier. We had fun together, shared stories about glacier on the road, we drank mate, and were ‘wowed’ in every step of the park. It was truly impressive and unforgettable natural creature to see. 50 shades of blue in every side you look! The sound when a big (or even smaller) piece would fall, would give us shivers all over the body… Something to remember and cherish!

P.S.

Some facts about the transportation and distances:

Ushuaia- Rio Gallegos, by hitchiking 580km in one day- 3 cars

Rio Gallegos- El Calafate, by hitchiking 205km in one day- 3 cars

All together 785km

Since beginning of our trip (Buenos Aires) we made already 3898km

Best wishes our dear friends!
